Why Zippo Lighters are best to use?

Talk of lighters and the first name that comes to the mind is that of Zippo lighters. These lighters are reusable and made from metals. Today, Zippo has become a grand name in the lighter industry and there are millions of people who use lighters of the same brand. It is amazing to see the myriad designs and styles in which these lighters are available. Zippo is sold globally and there are customers for the lighter brand from all over the world.

History of lighters from the house of Zippo

Zippo lighters are manufactured by American Zippo Manufacturing Company. The company was established in the year 1932 by George Grant Blaisdell. Presently the company has its headquarters in Bradford, Pennsylvania, U.S. The first Zippo lighter by the company was manufactured in the year 1933. The design of this lighter was inspired by some Austrian cigarette lighter. It was in 1936 that a formal patent was granted for the Zippo lighter.

These lighters gained immense popularity with the United States military forces, particularly during the 2nd World War. All the lighters that were manufactured by the company were dedicated to be sold to the military only. Brass is the main metal used in the making of the Zippos, but during the time of the war black crackled steel was used as there was lack of metal.

Once the war was over, these lighters became a great platform for marketing and advertising. Hand written messages and later printed and carved messages were used on the lighters for branding and marketing.

Interesting facts about the Zippo lighters

  • All Zippo lighters come with lifetime warranty. Till date there have been no complaints with the lighters and this is evidence of the quality that is implemented in the product. In case the Zippo breaks, it can be repaired no matter what and when the purchase date was. Almost 8 million repairs have been done on the lighters till date.
  • The style of Zippo lighters is unmatched. Many lighter companies have come and tried to imitate and replicate Zippo designs. But a brand remains a brand. The stylish cover of the lighter which can be opened with a flick is simply amazing. Along with the exteriors, the interiors of the lighters are also made of high quality materials.
  • Zippo windproof lighters need special mention as they are unique. Like other lighters, there lighters do not go off in windy situations. Just blowing out the flame will not extinguish these lighters. These lighters burn with a wick and for putting off the flame, the top half has to be closed so that oxygen supply is cut off and the flame is extinguished.

Zippo has a museum of its own in Bradford. People visit the museum to know about Zippo’s history, the different Zippo models and to visit the Repair Clinic. The first and the 500 millionth lighter manufactured by the company are put on display in the museum. They almost look similar with the older one being little bigger in size.

Prices of Zippo lighters

Zippo lighters come in varied price ranges. Right from mere US$14.95 to US$11,893.85 – the price range is so expansive. It is interesting to note that there are many people who love collecting Zippo lighters for their personal collections and they might have more than one lighter in their stock.

Zipping a Little History with Zippo

A Zippo lighter is a reusable metal lighter manufactured by American Manufacturing Company Zippo. Zippo was founded by George G. Blaisdell in 1932, producing the first Zippo lighter in 1933. The name came about because George liked the sound of the word “zipper” and thought “zippo” sounded more modern.

Thousands of different styles and designs have been made with over 500,000,000 produced over the past eighty decades since the company began, and from 1949 to 2002, Zippo lighters were also produced in Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada. The first Zippo lighters sold for $1.95 each and were backed by Mr Blaisdell’s unconditional lifetime guarantee: “It works or we fix it free”.

The lighters quickly became popular with the US Military especially during World War II, and it became popular amongst the American Soldiers of the Vietnam War to get their Zippos engraved with personal mottos.

A museum called “Zippo/Case visitors centre” is located in Bradford, Pennsylvania at 1932 Zippo Drive. The museum contains rare and custom-made lighters, and also sells the entire Zippo line.

Zippo lighters gained popularity as windproof lights and being able to stay lit during harsh weather conditions due to the design of the windscreen. They are typically made of brass and are rectangular with a hinged top. The design of the Zippo lighter remains the same to this day, with minor improvements.

Here we’ve put together a few of our favourite designs from our website:

Zippo lighters are stronger and more resistant to damage compared to the disposable ones. They are much more cost-effective in the long run as all you need to do when the fuel runs out is buy lighter fuel, where with disposable lighters; you need have to keep buying new ones. You can also purchase lighter fluid here.

As well as having Zippo lighters and fluids, we also have a brilliant range of Zippo accessories – hand warmers for the cold winter months, Zippo wicks, flints and pouches.

The making of Zippo lighters

‘The American icon’

The story of the Zippo lighter is not just a story about the manufacturing or who created it. It has the story of the past and history follows the story with Zippo taking place in certain events in history. The man who we have to thank for this legendary lighter is George G Blaisdell, but the other people we have to also thank are the employees, customers and collectors for keeping the brand going.

1930’s

Zippo lighters first came about in the early 1930’s, at Bradford Country club in Pennsylvania. Mr Blaisdell watched a friend struggle using a cumber stone Austrian made lighter. Although the lighter worked well in the wind, the lighters appearance was a disaster!

Mr Blaisdell decided that he would redesign the Austrian lighter that he had seen. Then the new redesigned lighter came to be the first ever Zippo lighter, and is displayed at the Zippo case museum in Bradford. This lighter was produced in 1933 and was sold to the public for $1.95 each. And from this first ever Zippo lighter Mr Blaisdell backed his product with the lifetime guarantee ‘It works or we fix it for free!’

The name Zippo was created by the founder of the company Mr Blaisdell, he first liked the name ‘zipper’ but he then changed it to Zippo as he thought that it had more of a modern sound to it. The application for the original Zippo patent was filled on May 17th 1934, and the patent number was given as 2032695, the application was guaranteed on March 3rd 1936.

In the mid 30’s, Bradford’s Kendall refining company placed an order for 500 Zippo lighters! These were thought to be the first company advertised lighters produced by Zippo, these are also highly collectable. Companies still use Zippo lighters as an advertisement and Zippo advertising lighters are among the collectors favourite.

In 1939, World War II had a big effect on Zippo. Due to the Americans entry to the war Zippo stopped the production of the lighters for their consumers. This was done so that the Zippo factory’s and their workers could souly focus on manufacturing for the US military.

This military action led to the production of the steel – case Zippo lighter with a black crackle finish. Millions of American military personal carried a Zippo lighter into war and this then made a significant change to Zippo’s name and then led to make Zippo lighters an American icon! Not only was the company name getting more well known and successful. The fact that nearly every American man in the army was buying a Zippo lighter left Zippo with a very strong financial side, which made it a viable company.

1940’s

When the war ended Zippo went on the road touring the US selling lighters to people in America. As a lot of driving would be involved Mr Blaisdell decided that he wanted to create a car that looked like a Zippo lighter. So of course Mr Blaisdell made this happen, in 1947 the Zippo car was born, and toured around the US selling the world’s most reliable and used lighters!
